How City Area Codes Work

One City, Multiple Codes

Major metropolitan areas like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are served by multiple area codes. As demand for phone numbers grew, overlay codes were added to the same geographic region, allowing cities to accommodate millions of subscribers.

Cross-State Coverage

Some area codes span across city boundaries or even state lines. Metropolitan areas that straddle multiple states (like Kansas City, MO/KS) can share area codes across jurisdictions, making city-based lookups essential for accurate results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my city have multiple area codes? +
As demand for phone numbers grows, new area codes are added through a process called "overlaying." This means your city gets additional codes while existing numbers stay the same. Major cities often have 3-5+ active codes.
Can I search by zip code instead? +
Currently, our city search works by city name. For best results, enter the city name with or without the state abbreviation (e.g., "Austin" or "Austin, TX"). Zip code search is planned for a future update.
What if my city isn't listed? +
Try searching for a nearby larger city or directly input the area code you're interested in using the Area Code search tab. Area codes typically cover broader regions, so a nearby major city will share the same code.
Do area codes change over time? +
Area codes are added but rarely removed. New overlay codes are introduced when a region exhausts its available numbers. Existing area codes and phone numbers remain unchanged β€” only new numbers may be assigned the new code.
